Ontology, Epistemology, and Multimethod Research in Political Science

Abstract: Epistemologies and research methods are not free of metaphysics. This is to say that they are both, supported by (or presumed by), and support (or presume) fundamental ontologies. A discussion of the epistemological foundations of “multimethod” research in the social sciences—in as much as such research claims to unearth “causal” relations—therefore cannot avoid the ontological presuppositions or implications of such a discussion. But though there isn’t necessarily a perfect correspondence between ontology, ep… Show more

“…We understand multi-method research (MMR) as the combination of a statistical large-n analysis with process tracing (Lieberman 2005), or the integration of QCA with process tracing (Schneider and Rohlfing 2013). 28 MMR has been criticized as incoherent because the large-n and the small-n analysis are accused of applying incommensurable logics of inference (Chatterjee 2013). Our discussion of statistical observational research, QCA and process tracing shows that this critique is attributable to a misconception of the underlying theories of causation.…”

“…Ontology concerns the assumptions made about the nature of the social reality that is being investigated, whereas epistemology concerns assumptions on how knowledge of this reality can be obtained (Blaikie, 2007). The relationship between the ontology, epistemology and methodology of a given study is not unidirectional but they rather reinforce each other (Chatterjee, 2011). This means that ontological and epistemological assumptions guide the choosing of methods; but also methods, data and research decisions may shape our way of perceiving the nature of social reality and knowledge.…”

“…This means that ontological and epistemological assumptions guide the choosing of methods; but also methods, data and research decisions may shape our way of perceiving the nature of social reality and knowledge. Furthermore, when a study consists of several methodologies (i.e., mixed methods research), a thor-ough discussion on applicable ontological and epistemological assumptions is particularly warranted (Chatterjee, 2011).…”

“…Modern research on (social) philosophy of science shows that ontology is an essential theoretical issue in philosophy of science and theoretical research in specific disciplines (Burian and Trout, 1995) and each empirical science requires certain metaphysical foundations (Esfeld, 2006;Dilworth, 1996). With the contemporary renaissance of ontology (Yu, 2002), the ontologies of economics (Mäki, 2001), politics (Stanley, 2012;Chatterjee, 2011), history (Pang, 1988), natural science (scientific realism) (Worrall, 1994), mathematics (Tymoczko, 1991), physics (Harre, 1997) and so on are widely and deeply discussed. These philosophical discussions promote the theoretical development of the relevant disciplines.…”
