Ontology-based system for supporting manufacturing sustainability

Abstract: Sustainability is one of the biggest challenges of this century either for the environment or economical growth. The required cultural shift needs challenging action that will involve deeply software and hardware aspect of manufacturing processes. In this paper, the software part of the matter is addressed by proposing a product centric ontology, in which concepts of product, processes and resources are associated to functions and sustainable manufacturing knowledge. The aim is to design a knowledge-based syst… Show more

“…-Colledani et al [28] conceptually modeled the manufacturing domain perspective on products, processes and production systems in order to model them in an integrated way. Other example references for ontologies used as integrated models of manufacturing systems are: [29]- [31]. -In [17] and [32] ontologies are also created that represent the manufacturing domain but with another objective:…”

“…The proposed agent performed reasoning based on the facts described by the ontology and made a deduction if the proposed manufacturing environment can address the given requirements. Another ontological approach supporting the manufacturing sustainability was proposed in [22]. The core of the presented ontology related to product, process, and resource concepts and to their relationships with the manufacturing sustainability.…”

“…In this way, the facility resource consumption efficiency is not impacted by the networking strategy. Moreover, already in [30] authors showed how a function-based (i.e. logic) design can be integrated with the enterprise information systems in order to support sustainability.…”
