“…The curious findings in avian studies that involve mapping cell bodies that show VIP-like-ir using ICC are the few neurons detected in the cortex (Kuenzel and Blä hser, 1994;Aste et al, 1995;Bottjer and Alexander, 1995). In contrast, both radioimmunoassay (Emson et al, 1979;McGregor et al, 1982;Nobou et al, 1985) and ICC (Fuxe et al, 1977;Lorén et al, 1979;Morrison et al, 1984;Abrams et al, 1985) studies have shown that the cerebral cortex of mammals contains very high quantities of VIP and VIP-like neurons.…”

“…VIP was later found to be a widely distributed neuropeptide with neurotransmitter, neuromodulator and neurohormone functions [22], Ontogénie studies of VIP by radioimmunoassays suggest that VIP mainly appears in the postnatally developing animal, with high concentrations in specific brain structures such as the cerebral cortex, the hypothalamus and the hippocampus [6,16,19]. Our studies suggest that the postnatal increase in VIP content in the brain is regulated at the level of gene expression [8,13].…”

“…Perhaps the only controversial issue in this respect is the time of first appearance of cortical VIP cells. Authors, however, concur that in the rat, VIP is a relatively late appearing peptide, and the problem of its earliest histochemical demonstration is merely technical (McDonald et al 1982;Nobou et al 1985;Cavanagh and Parnavelas 1989). We regard therefore, the fact that we were able to point out cortical VIP cells as early as on PI, i.e., earlier than demonstrated by others (Emson et al 1979;McDonald et al 1982;Cavanagh and Parnavelas 1989) important as proving the sensitivity of the procedure used by us.…”
