Ontogeny of the body skeleton inSeriola dumerili(Risso, 1810)

Abstract: Osteological development of Seriola dumerili is described and illustrated based on 141 specimens (3.9-27.0 mm TL) reared under semi-intensive culture conditions (Greece). The ontogeny of the vertebral column started with the formation of the neural arches (4.6 mm TL) and continued with the haemal arches and the centrum (4.8 mm TL). Until the end of the study, the centrum (12.5 mm TL) and neural arches (23.8 mm TL) were fully formed, while the haemal arches were not. The first skeletal elements of the fins star… Show more

“…In S. aurata [30] and D. sargus [47], two centra mineral deposition models occur the first one takes place in a D-V direction from the Ce 1 to Ce 21 and the second one in a V-D direction in Ce 22 and Ce 23 . In S. rivoliana, the mineralization expands in a D-V direction from Ce 1 to Ce 23 , following the same pattern as S. dumerili between the Ce 1 -Ce 19 [28]. Additionally, S. rivoliana had simultaneously DVS mineralization from Ce 8 to Ce 23 , whereas S. dumerili [28] presents this simultaneous DVS mineralization pattern from Ce 20 to Ce 23 .…”
