Ontogeny of morphological traits in Phenopelopidae (Acari: Oribatida)

Abstract: In this study, the complete ontogenetic development of morphological traits in Phenopelopidae was investigated on the base of juvenile and adult specimens of Eupelops hirtus (Berlese, 1916) and Peloptulus phaenotus (CL Koch, 1844) and literature. The juveniles of Eupelops Ewing, 1917, Peloptulus Berlese, 1908 and Propelops Jacot, 1937 show plicate integument and a dorsoventrally flattened hysterosoma, with short setae c 1 , c 3 and of d-series on the gastronotum, which seem to be typical of Phenopelopidae. How… Show more

“…Formulae of epimeral setae are: 3-1-2 (larva), 3-1-2-1 (protonymph), 3-1-2-2 (deutonymph) and 3-1-3-3 (tritonymph and adult), formula of genital setae is 1-3-5-6 (protonymph to adult), that of aggenital setae is 1-1-1 (deutonymph to adult) and the formula of segments PS-AN (PS, AD, AN) is 03333-0333-022. The ontogeny of leg setae of E. curtipilus is similar to that of E. hirtus studied by Seniczak et al (2014), and solenidion φ is absent from tibia IV of deuto-and tritonymph and adult.…”

“…The adult loses notogastral setae c 1 , c 3 and of d-series such that the developmental formula of these setae is as in E. curtipilus. Formulae of gastronotal, epimeral, genital, aggenital setae and formula of segments PS-AN are as in E. curtipilus, and the ontogeny of leg setae is similar as in E. hirtus studied by Seniczak et al (2014).…”
