Onset of flow instability with one-side heated swirl tube for fusion reactor safety

Abstract: In this study, the onset of flow instability (OFI) heat flux of a one-side heated swirl tube is experimentally investigated. The OFI heat flux means the minimum heat flux that can cause flow instability by the vapor generated in the flow path. An analysis of the effect of system parameters on the OFI heat flux indicates that as the pressure increases, the bubble size decreases. Therefore, the void fraction decreases and, consequently, the OFI heat flux tends to increase. Similarly, the higher the flow rate and… Show more

“…A solenoid valve with on-off function is installed under the accumulator to discharge all used water out of the loop after the experiment. Detailed information on the experimental equipment or loop design process can be found in previous papers [39][40][41]. Table 1 summarizes the ranges of the system parameters and uncertainties of the measured variables of the sub-cooled flow boiling experiment conducted in this study.…”

“…The heating area loaded by the heater was designed to have a width of 23 mm and a length of 100 mm, based on the results of a previous study, in which the peak heat flux of several MW m −2 was loaded on a diverter whose length did not exceed 100 mm [44]. The results of a number of experiments conducted for the heater development or heater design process can be found in previous studies [39][40][41].…”

“…To address this issue, the RANdom SAMple consensus (RANSAC) algorithm was used in our regression analysis. RANSAC has the characteristic of completely ignoring data above a certain threshold, allowing for the mitigation of the influence of outliers and the derivation of an optimal model supported by the bulk of the data [53,54]. The RANSAC algorithm operates under the following assumptions: (1) that the dataset contains outliers; (2) that the dataset can be expressed using mathematical model factors; (3) that inlier data can be incorrectly determined to be outliers as a result of extreme values, incorrect measurement of data, or incorrect assumptions about data interpretation; and (4) that there is an algorithm that can predict the model parameters or fit the data in a given set of inliers.…”
