Onset of dynamic stall of tubercled wings

Abstract: In the present study, numerical simulation of the flow field of the tubercled NACA0021 (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) wing has been conducted with the large eddy simulation model. Then, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis has been carried out at trough and peak sections. According to the spatial distributions and temporal coefficients in the case of αA=5°, the physical backgrounds of corresponding POD modes could be identified, including flow attachment, separation, and the dynamic st… Show more

“…At the large AOA, the visualization image of the oil flow in the leading-edge region of the WLE airfoil indicates that the WLE will generate vortices in the spanwise direction. Previous studies [17,21,42] also showed that the pressure distribution differed at the spreading nodular crest and trough, resulting in different influences of the vortices on the flow field at the crest and trough of the WLEs. The velocity distribution of the flow field at the WLEs crest and WLEs trough is different, resulting from the streamwise vortices' influence on the spreading direction.…”

“…14 Another popular strategy is the use of deployable actuators such as trailing edge flaps, [15][16][17] leading-edge minitabs, 18 and vortex generators. 19 Nature-inspired concepts, such as leading-edge tubercles 20 and bio-inspired alula, 21,22 have also been explored for altering the dynamics of the LEV and the process of dynamic stall.…”

“…The spatial computational domains for resolving the dynamic stall are discretized into up to 10 6 grid nodes to obtain sufficient accuracy. 25,26 Therefore, CFD models are high order, requiring considerably computational cost. In addition, the major issue of large-scale complex flow modeling is the reduction of the computational cost while preserving numerical accuracy.…”
