Within the lifecycle of a ship’s hull structure, damage due to collisions has been a focal point of research for researchers both domestically and internationally. To enhance the predictive accuracy of failure criteria in the simulation of ship hull collisions, this paper focuses on the modified Mohr–Coulomb (MMC) failure criterion for metals, utilizing a hybrid experimental–numerical method for parameter calibration. Consideration of stress-state-dependent mesh size sensitivity has been amended, and the approach is integrated into the comprehensive nonlinear finite element software Abaqus 2020. Finite element tensile simulations were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the MMC criterion. Simulation analyses were conducted based on drop hammer collision experiments with various failure criteria and grid sizes. The comparative validation highlighted the superiority of the mesh size sensitivity-corrected MMC failure criterion. The outcomes of this research provide a foundation for assessing the structural safety of ship hulls.

Family historians frequently encounter ethical issues in the course of their research, and many come to recognise the moral dilemmas facing them. Common dilemmas revolve around topics such as whether family secrets should be revealed or favourite stories debunked in light of the evidence, how the privacy of living relatives can be maintained when family histories are published, if the ‘sins of the fathers’ require reparation (and how this might be possible), and to what extent is it acceptable to romanticise or ‘whitewash’ one’s ancestral story. In this paper, dilemmas such as these are discussed using the theoretical framework of psychologist Jonathan Haidt whose model of five moral ‘instincts’ includes care, fairness, loyalty, respect for authority, and sanctity. It is concluded that examining ethical issues using such a framework has the potential to stimulate empathy, reduce impulsive action, and increase the likelihood of finding creative solutions to moral dilemmas.

Evaluation of PV and CSP Systems to Supply Power in the Zimbabwe Mining Sector

The drought that occurred in Zimbabwe in 2020 affected the country’s main hydro-power station causing the electricity supply to be less secure and reliable. This challenge resulted in load-shedding, which is not desirable to mining companies that require constant and reliable power for their operations. In that regard, a techno-economic analysis was carried out to assess the potential of integrating concentrated solar power (+thermal storage) and photovoltaics (+battery storage) to supply power at a typical mine in Zimbabwe. Two scenarios were simulated—a base case with no exports to the grid and another case where exports were allowed. The models were evaluated based on the generated renewable energy offsetting the demand from the mine, the energy exported, the grid contribution, the localised cost of energy and the net present value. The results show that the addition of a battery storage system to PV improves the percentage of the load offset by the renewable system and the generated energy by the renewable system by almost double. However, the installation cost, required land, LCOE, and simple pay-back also increased by approximately a factor of 2. The addition of a thermal storage system to CSP increased the generated energy, the capacity factor, and the renewable energy contribution by approximately a factor of 2. However, the land required for development and the installation costs also nearly doubled.
