Online monitoring of oil film using electrical capacitance tomography and level set method

Abstract: In the application of oil-air lubrication system, electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) provides a promising way for monitoring oil film in the pipelines by reconstructing cross sectional oil distributions in real time. While in the case of small diameter pipe and thin oil film, the thickness of the oil film is hard to be observed visually since the interface of oil and air is not obvious in the reconstructed images. And the existence of artifacts in the reconstructions has seriously influenced the effective… Show more

“…As the thickness of such films is usually at micron or sub-micron scales and the films normally located at a closed space, accurate measurement is very difficult to achieve. Until now, there are several techniques available to do this measurement based on the electrical, 13 optical, 4,5 or acoustic 611 characteristics of the oil film layer. The electrical methods obtain the oil film thickness via the resistance or capacitance of the oil film layer.…”

“…Compared with other process tomography techniques, such as ultrasound, optics, X-ray and gamma-ray, it has several advantages, including low cost, rapid response, good portability, radiation-free and good robustness [3], [4]. The ECT technique has been used for parameter measurement and process monitoring for industrial applications, e.g., two-phase flow [5], pneumatic conveying [6], fluidized beds [7], and flame monitoring [8].…”
