Online Health Monitoring of DC-Link Capacitors in Modular Multilevel Converters for FACTS and HVDC Applications

Abstract: This paper presents an online health monitoring scheme for dc capacitors in modular multilevel converters (MMCs). The health monitoring algorithm is based on detecting changes in the dc capacitance value over time. The proposed algorithm only utilizes measurements that are typically available in flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications. Hence, in the proposed estimation method, no additional sensors are used. The estimation scheme considers t… Show more

“…Online CM for SM capacitors in MMCs is well addressed in the literature [8], [9]. Moreover, online monitoring of semiconductor devices in MMCs has been presented in [10], where the ON-state collector-emitter voltage v CE,ON is used as a health indicator.…”

“…For instance, the arm inductance dominates the high frequency input impedance [17] and thus, its value can be approximated by injecting high frequency perturbations. The arm capacitance can be approximated using either the second-order harmonic ripple of the capacitor voltages [24], or by data driven methods [25]. In this paper, full knowledge of the converter circuit structure and parameters has been assumed, and only parts of the control system have been treated as a black-box.…”

“…Deriving an accurate arm current depends on knowing the submodule capacitance value accurately. Thus, the capacitance value should be periodically updated with a proper method during normal operation [13]. Moreover, the capacitor voltage measurement circuit should have a sufficiently high precision to calculate the derivative of the voltage between the consecutive control cycles.…”
