In Rapid Prototyping (RP) parts are manufactured layer-upon-layer. The part accuracy primarily influenced by process parameters, material, geometry of parts and types of RP technology used. This work presents the comparative study of dimensional accuracy, form error (roundness, flatness and cylindricity), surface roughness, cost analysis and tolerance grade of a automotive parts (connecting rod) generated through fused deposition modeling system (Ultimaker-2, MakerBot Replector-2) and polyjet 3D printing system (Objet30). CATIA-V6 was used for the 3D modeling and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was employed for the measurements of dimensions. Optical profilometer was considered to measure the surface roughness of component. ISO UNI EN 20286-I (1995) and DIN 16901 standards was used for the evaluating IT grades for each selected dimension. Total cost of prototype generated by different 3D printers was calculated on the basis of cost of build material, cost of support material, labour cost and machine cost. The results of measurement show that quality of prototype fabricated by Objet30 is better than Ultimaker and MakerBot. Form error and surface roughness of objet30 printer was good enough to produce industrial grade prototype. The novel contribution of this work lies in the fact that no such studies was conducted using complex shape geometry in the archival literature.

Scaled model test is an effective means to verify the design of a stiffened cylindrical shell. However, there is a problem of similarity distortion by use of the traditional dimensional analysis to design scaled models. In this present study, an equivalent similar method is proposed to solve the problem. The method is applied to an axial stiffened cylindrical shell, and the equivalent criteria and scaling laws satisfying the equivalent similarity of global bending mode are derived and verified by numerical examples. The results indicate that the similarity distortion caused by practical conditions for the stiffened cylindrical shell can be solved and the parameters of scaled model can be designed more freely with the proposed equivalent similar method.

Purpose Rapid prototyping can potentially accelerate the entire process of new product development (NPD), enabling a high level of customer involvement and hence new product success (NPS). This study aims to examine the relationship between prototyping and NPS, and the moderating effect of customer involvement, as well as the influence of speed of information dissemination on customer involvement. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected using the survey method through structured questionnaires. The key participants were management and team leaders from technology-based companies. Findings The results indicate that prototyping positively correlates with NPS, particularly when customer involvement is high. The speed of information dissemination, both from customers and on competitive products, has a positive impact on customer involvement. Research limitations/implications The study was limited by the undefined development stage of the prototype when offered for customer feedback. Future studies could focus on how customer involvement at each stage of prototype development affects NPS through a moderating effect. Practical implications The study confirms that investing in prototyping equipment for NPD increases the probability of NPS. Information capturing customers’ views and on competitive products in the market should be shared among the NPD teams. This could encourage better sharing of opinions and perceptions with customers about whether new products meet their wishes and expectations. Originality/value This study demonstrates that customer involvement moderates the relationship between prototyping and NPS. The degree of customer involvement depended on the speed of response of the customers themselves and on how well competitive product information was disseminated within the NPD team.
