The Design of Tasks to Suit Distance Learning in Emergency Education

Researchers are interested in task design in distance learning. This task design is critical in emergency education that uses distance learning. The present research investigated mathematics and science teachers’ task design in distance learning during the emergency education due to COVID-19. Fourteen teachers participated in the research: seven mathematics teachers and seven science teachers. The data collection tool was the interview, and the data analysis tools were deductive and inductive content analysis, where the deductive analysis was based on the didactic situation framework. The research results indicated that the participating teachers could utilize the technological tools to design tasks that encourage the students’ devolution regarding the activities that they carry out. Furthermore, the use of the potentialities of the distance learning platforms enabled successful communication between the participants in the didactic situation. It is recommended that quantitative research is used to investigate the ways in which the various components in the design could affect students’ learning.

Teacher Views on Teaching Sustainability in Higher Education Institutes in Australia

Higher education for sustainable development (HESD) plays a key role in achieving the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research study specifically examined HESD in terms of eLearning initiatives in Australian private higher education providers from the perspective of teachers. A qualitative structured interview method was adopted wherein 10 teachers were interviewed in order to gain an understanding of their general knowledge of HESD, their attitudes and experience towards HESD, their teaching practices related to HESD, and their understandings of strategy as well as planning initiatives for their institution. The main findings suggest that (1) teachers in private higher education providers tend to have a limited knowledge of sustainability concepts and limited experience in teaching sustainability; (2) eLearning can be a valuable approach in teaching sustainability, but this approach presents teachers with challenges such as student engagement; and (3) private higher education providers require proper resources and governance frameworks in order for any sustainability initiative to be successful. This research highlights the resourcing aspect of private higher education providers in training staff, developing learning materials, and developing practical guidelines to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

The main challenge of modern land management is the need to increase the yield of cultivated crops, while maintaining quality, minimising total energy inputs into cultivation and minimising the negative impact on the environment. This is quite possible if we have healthy seeds characterised, first of all, by improved sowing qualities. In order to realise the mentioned approaches, it is possible to use seed preparation for sowing, using for this purpose various electrophysical effects, including treatment of seed material in the electric field of high voltage. The purpose of the presented article is to analyse the results obtained to study the process of treatment of cereal seeds before sowing in the electric field of constant and alternating high voltage, as well as the electric field of pulsed high-voltage discharges. A universal experimental laboratory setup was assembled for the research. According to the results of the experiments, there was a clear dependence of the speed and friendliness of germination of winter triticale and barley seeds on the effects of electrical nature on them. Efficiency of such influences is also shown in plant protection against various pests, so against bread fleas and meromysa it is treatment in the electric field of alternating high voltage with duration of 120 s, as well as against Swedish fly, but with duration of treatment of 60 s; against wheat thrips – in the electric field of constant high voltage with duration of 60 s. Besides optimisation of phytosanitary condition of crops, the stimulating effect of high voltage electric field on yield structure of cereal crops (winter barley and triticale) was revealed, as productivity increases, bushiness and more dense productive stalks are formed. Electrostimulation has a positive effect on such hard-to-regulate parameter as ear fineness – the total number of grains in the ear increases by 13.8…31.0%; the weight of 1000 grains slightly increases – by 3.0…6.2%; grain yield to total weight increases by 40.3…57.8%; positive effect on all elements of yield structure is traced.
