Online auction marketplaces as a global pathway for aquatic invasive species

Abstract: The ornamental aquarium pet trade is a leading pathway for the introduction of aquatic invasive species. In addition to purchasing live organisms in stores, hobbyists are engaging more with alternative informal online marketplaces that enable peer-to-peer selling of aquarium organisms via auctions. Although growing in popularity, little is known regarding the global extent of informal marketplaces, including the taxonomy of species that are traded, their economic value, and the geographic routes by which live … Show more

“…In this issue, Forneck et al (2021) demonstrate that aquaculture intensity is a good predictor of catch frequency of a known high-impact invader, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus, 1758), in Brazilian streams, which implies that aquaculture ponds are insufficiently isolated to prevent accidental escape and provide a steady source of propagules for invasion. Olden et al (2021) show that ornamental aquarium trade via informal online marketplaces encompassed sales of hundreds of thousands of organisms and introduced a multitude of new, decentralized and difficult to regulate pathways, thereby facilitating global transport of AIS. This study highlights the increasing potential of online markets to become the new frontier of non-native species introductions in the world.…”

“…Here, we demonstrate that text classification can be viable tool to identify irrelevant listings. When considering data on the scale of ‘big data’ of tens to hundreds of thousands of online advertisements (e.g., [ 28 ]), text classifiers have the potential to save tens to hundreds of hours of curation effort. We recommend future application of text classifiers and testing other machine learning and natural language processing tools when cleaning messy data collected from the Internet on wildlife trade.…”
