Online analysis enhances use of NASA Earth science data

Abstract: Giovanni, the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) Interactive Online Visualization and Analysis Infrastructure, has provided researchers with advanced capabilities to perform data exploration and analysis with observational data from NASA Earth observation satellites. In the past 5–10 years, examining geophysical events and processes with remote‐sensing data required a multistep process of data discovery, data acquisition, data management, and ultimately data analysis. Giovan… Show more

“…Late wet monsoon season onsets also depend on largescale forcing (Marengo et al, 2001;Zhang et al, 2008). As previously discussed in Section 4 subsidence enhancement and circulation changes due to large-scale forcing are likely to be the primary mechanism for the persistence and intensity of (Acker and Leptoukh, 2007) and is known as MODIS level-3 monthly mean gridded product at the horizontal regular resolution of 1°in latitude by 1°in longitude.…”

“…The satellite data products used in this study were obtained from the NASA Giovanni web interface (http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/, last access 26 May 2017), developed and maintained by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) (Acker and Leptoukh, 2007 Jun 2016) satellites. The obtained Aqua and Terra time series were averaged.…”

“…S4 (Draxler and Hess, 1998;Acker and Leptoukh, 2007;Justice et al, 2011). The strong pollution at the ATTO site resulted from the presence of intense fires in the southern Amazon and a temporary 'swing' of the BT track over the fire locations.…”

“…To further explore factors that may explain any systematic differences between the variables, spatially explicit univariate and multivariate linear models were fit to the residuals. Temporal (year, month), spatial (distance from the nearest coast, bathymetry, latitude, Chl), and optical (climatological CDOM index; Acker and Leptoukh 2007;Morel and Gentili 2009;Siegel et al 2005) factors were included as possible explanatory variables. An autocovariate was included within the models to account for any potential spatial dependence in the residuals.…”
