This paper contributes to modeling and supervision of multi-stage centrifugal compressors coping with real-gas processes and steady to highly transient operating conditions. A novel dynamic model is derived, and the incorporation of the generic Lee-Kesler-Plöcker real-gas equation of state and its derivatives is presented. The model allows for embedding arbitrarily shaped performance maps, based on state-of-the-art polytropic change-of-state compressor characteristics. As the validity of these maps is a key issue for simulation and model-based monitoring, performance maps are treated as time-variant, and their shape is to be identified and monitored during operation. The proposed real-time map estimation scheme comprises an Unscented Kalman Filter and a newly proposed algorithm, referred to as Recursive Map Estimation. The combination yields a novel parameter and state estimator, which is expected to be superior if some parameters are characterized by a distinct operating point dependency. Two additional time-variant parameters are provided for monitoring: The first indicates the level of confidence in the local estimate, and the second points to drastic performance map alterations, which may be further exploited in fault detection. A modified reference simulation of a two-stage supercritical carbon dioxide compressor with known state trajectories, performance maps, and alterations demonstrates the successful application of the entire monitoring scheme, and serves for a discussion of the results.

Abstract-The optimization of the operation of chemical plants may require the development of mathematical models of the process units of a plant. These mathematical models can be either first-principles or data-driven models. The former type of modeling may be complex for the use in optimization and especially for online applications such as real time optimization. Available measured process data can be used to develop the latter type of modeling. Although data-driven models offer several benefits for online applications, there are some very significant challenges related to their development in a practical industrial implementation. This paper discusses the important aspects of the building of data-driven models and demonstrates the effects of these types of models on the optimization results. The current work demonstrates the application of a real time optimization framework applied to an industrial air compressor station of an air separation plant when the models are based on operating data.

We present a computational method for achieving an optimal operation of compressor units used in industrial gas storage systems. The proposed method is capable to operate with a mix of compressor types (i.e., with different operational parameters, different power drives, and different types of construction, e.g., reciprocal and turbocompressors). The goal of the optimisation is to find an optimal compressors configuration and distribution of the compressor loads for each instance of time. The proposed method is based on conversion of a multidimensional discrete-continuous optimisation problem into a set of independent combinatorial and nonlinear optimisation problems. We derive the mathematical foundations of the algorithms. The exemplary results of the application are presented.
