“…Focusing attention on objective measures (glucose levels) or providing medication reminders, may have resulted in more effective self-management behaviors (e.g., taking medicine, exercise). Future studies will need more detailed measures of intermediate variables, such as exercise and diet to determine if there were changes in lifestyle behaviors (King et al 2007). We are currently conducting a straight-forward comparison of ASMM versus care in a larger, randomized trial, including detailed assessment of components of the Common Sense Model of T2DM and life-style factors in order to compare changes related to the intervention.…”

“…Computer tailoring has shown promising effects in various health promotion programs [6,7], and has shown promising effects among older adults [8][9][10]. Researchers have recently acknowledged the importance of a more ecological approach to PA promotion by addressing social and physical environmental determinants in addition to focusing solely on intrapersonal determinants [11][12][13][14].…”

“…Examples of this type of "bottom up" approach to broadening interventions in the field include the use of trained community volunteers and service sectors in intervention delivery and evaluation, 69,70 as well as development and evaluation of state-of-the-art communication technologies to broaden intervention delivery in a potentially cost-sensitive manner. 49,71,72 Notably, older adults represent one of the fastest growing user groups of computers as well as Internet and social networking services. 73 Information technologies thus represent an increasingly pervasive and promising method for delivering health services and support, 74 including preventive health services, to them.…”
