One-year parasitological screening of stray dogs and cats in County Dublin, Ireland

Abstract: To date, there are no recent studies identifying the prevalence of parasites of human and veterinary importance in dogs and cats in Ireland. The interaction between pets and wildlife species in the environment is an important source of parasite exposure to canids and felines, and one likely to be heightened in the stray animal population. This study aimed to establish the prevalence of endoparasites in unowned dogs and cats in County Dublin, Ireland. Feces from stray dogs (n= 627) and cats (n= 289) entering a … Show more

“…This differentiation may be important in certain geographical regions where dogs have been found to be primarily infected with U. stenocephala, e.g. in Spain, UK, Ireland and Greece [3,[17][18][19]. Monthly administered products that include a macrocyclic lactone are particularly beneficial in that they not only provide control of most important intestinal parasitic nematodes of dogs but also provide control of the clinically important cardiopulmonary nematodes [2].…”

“…The heteroxenous life-cycle relies on gastropods as intermediate hosts, and different prey species play a role in transmission as paratenic hosts [7,8]. Most reports on A. abstrusus prevalence in cats originate from Europe, ranging between 0.1 and 10.7% in northern and central Europe [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] and between 8.0 and 27.3% in eastern and southern Europe [5,[17][18][19][20], but studies were also conducted in Asia (e.g. Qatar 7.5% [21]), the Americas (e.g.…”

“…The hookworm U. stenocephala is a common intestinal parasite of domestic dogs in regions with a cold climate. The prevalence rates of U. stenocephala can vary in different regions, as a function of climate, living conditions, quality of veterinary care, and diagnostic resources [11,12]. In Russia, this species is not as frequently recorded in dogs as is T. canis.…”
