One Year of Measurements with a POM-02 Sky Radiometer at an Alpine EuroSkyRad Station

Abstract: Aerosol optical properties at the Alpine station of Saint-Christophe, northern Italy are measured with a POM-02 sky radiometer. Diffuse radiances from the sky and direct sun irradiances are processed with SKYRAD and SUNRAD algorithms, respectively, providing consistent results. The aerosol optical depth at the station is generally very low (0.10 at a wavelength of 500 nm); however, spikes (up to 0.75) can occur due to the transport of Saharan dust and smoke clouds moving on an intercontinental scale, according… Show more

“…A PM 10 comparison with the gravimetric technique was additionally performed in Aosta-Saint-Christophe and provided satisfactory results (29 d; slope 1.08±0.04; intercept −3.8±1.4 µg m −3 ; R 2 = 0.96). Further instruments to monitor trace gases (Diémoz et al, 2014b) are employed at the station and the corresponding datasets will be investigated in future studies.…”

“…Different products from the MERRA-2 [114] were extracted for Rome and Aosta from the Giovanni data visualization base (https://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/Giovanni), for the time period 2006-2015 and used in order to understand the different roles of clouds and aerosols, i.e., the total cloud area fraction (TCAF) and the AOD at 550 nm. Although ground-based AOD is available for both stations [126,127], which would provide a more accurate climatology [128], the AOD from MERRA-2 was chosen since it was available for the whole period of study (2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015). Monthly means of AOD and TCAF were downloaded and then averaged over the period 2006-2015 in order to get the monthly climatologies.…”

“…The site is in a semirural context, partially influenced by vehicular traffic and anthropogenic activities from the city, such as domestic heating and industry. The experimental setup at this site includes an automated lidar ceilometer (ALC) for the operational monitoring of the aerosol profile (Dionisi et al, 2018), a POM-02 sun photometer for the retrieval of column aerosol properties and water vapour (Diémoz et al, 2014a;Campanelli et al, 2018), and a Fidas 200s optical particle counter (OPC) for the surface aerosol size distribution, in addition to instruments measuring solar radiation and trace gases (Diémoz et al, 2011(Diémoz et al, , 2014bSiani et al, 2013Siani et al, , 2018Federico et al, 2017). Aosta-downtown (580 m a.s.l.)…”
