Environmental filtering (EF) and dispersal filtering (DF) are widely known to shape plant community assembly. Particularly in arid and semi-arid mountainous regions, however, it remains unclear whether EF or DF dominate in the community assembly of different life forms or how they interact along elevational gradients. This research aims to reveal how different ecological processes influence herbaceous and woody community assembly and how they respond to various environmental drivers and elevational gradients. Here we integrated taxonomic diversity (TD), phylogenetic diversity (PD), and ecological drivers across an elevational gradient of 1,420 m in the Helan Mountain Nature Reserve, in typical arid and semi-arid areas of China. This study showed that the TD and PD of herbaceous communities significantly increase linearly with changing elevation gradients, while woody ‘TD’ showed a unimodal pattern, and there was little relationship between woody ‘PD’ and elevation. Herbaceous species exhibited significant phylogenetic clustering at low elevations, where they were influenced by climate, aspect, and tree cover. However, woody species exhibited random patterns across elevations. Herbaceous and woody species’ taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity is governed primarily by spatial turnover rather than nestedness. Spatial turnover is caused primarily by EF and DF’s combined influence, but their relative importance differs between herbaceous and woody communities. Therefore, we conclude that the responses of herbaceous and woody plants along elevation gradients in the Helan Mountains are decoupled due to their different adaptation strategies to climate factors in the drylands. These findings are important for understanding the assembly mechanisms driving plant communities in dryland under the context of dramatic increases in drought driven by climate warming.

Introduction: The deviation between high willingness and poor actual behaviors in community participation has become an obstacle to achieving effective management and resource protection of protected areas. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate this deviation and its influencing factors.Methods: Based on a field survey of community residents in the Shengjin Lake National Nature Reserve (SJLNNR) in Anhui Province, China, this study uses a Logistic-ISM model to analyze the key factors influencing the deviation and the hierarchical structure supporting those key factors.Results: There is a significant deviation between participation willingness and actual behavior in SJLNNR. This deviation is characterized by eight key factors. Among these, awareness of the necessity of establishing SJLNNR is a direct factor at the surface level. Participation of important or recognizable people; average annual family income; understanding of environmental protection laws and regulations; realization of environmental improvement effect; satisfaction with SJLNNR authority; and future earnings expectations are all intermediate indirect factors. Furthermore, resident member is a fundamental factor. Resident members refer to those who live at home for six months or more during a calendar year.Discussion: These results indicate that there are three possible practical reasons for the deviation: 1) The lack of young and middle-aged adults is the root cause. 2) Inadequate ecological compensation is the direct trigger. 3) Individual internal psychological factors have significant effects. Furthermore, this study provides policy implications for converting willingness into actual participation in the community and promoting sustainable development.

The official establishment of China’s national parks marks a new stage in the construction of China’s ecological civilization system. National parks systematically protect the areas with the richest biodiversity and the most complete ecosystem processes in China. This is beneficial not only for China’s natural conservation work, but also for the world’s response to environmental issues, such as climate change. Based on remote sensing images of land use in the four periods 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, this study calculated the land use changes in each national park during the corresponding period. Using the Plus model LEAS module, the driving factors of land use change in the national parks were studied and explored. In addition, the study used the InVEST model carbon storage module, using remote sensing images from different periods and the corresponding carbon pools of each national park as the basic data for model operation, to obtain the carbon storage changes in each national park over the past 30 years. Based on the hotspot analysis function, the hotspot areas of carbon storage changes in the national parks in the past 30 years were determined. Consequently, based on the CARS module of the PLUS model, the carbon storage in Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park in 2030 was estimated under different scenarios. Research suggested that, except for Sanjiangyuan National Park where grassland is the main land use type, the other four national parks are all dominated by forests, and the expansion and changes in the main land use types were due to human activities. In the past 30 years, the carbon storage in China’s national park ecosystem has mainly shown a trend of first increasing and then gradually decreasing. Based on the changes in carbon storage in the national park, restoration scenarios were simulated for the core protected and generally controlled areas of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park. Under the ideal scenario, the highest value of carbon storage would be achieved by 2030, which would be 7,468,250 t higher than that in 2020. The present study provides a reference for the regional management of China’s national parks and further confirms that the implementation of the national park system can enhance China’s ability to achieve carbon peaking and neutrality goals.
