One‐Step Synthesis of a Durable and Liquid‐Repellent Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Coating

Abstract: Coatings with low sliding angles for liquid drops have a broad range of applications. However, it remains a challenge to have a fast, easy, and universal preparation method for coatings that are long‐term stable, robust, and environmentally friendly. Here, a one‐step grafting‐from approach is reported for poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) brushes on surfaces through spontaneous polymerization of dichlorodimethylsilane fulfilling all these requirements. Drops of a variety of liquids slide off at tilt angles below 5… Show more

“…PDMS brushes have been identified as particularly effective antifouling coatings. 168 171 Even oils that completely wet almost all substrates easily roll off substrates coated with PDMS brushes. This has been attributed to the low surface energy of PDMS and the intrinsic liquid state of these brushes.…”

“…[ 13 ] Recent progress in extending the lubrication lifetime, by optimizing the rheological properties, patterned surface chemistry, surface geometry, and lubricant replenishment, remains an inherent limitation in lubrication under high‐speed turbulent flow, which severely restricts its practical applications such as in marine environments. [ 11 , 12 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ] In addition, the fouling resistance of slippery surfaces enables to sustain their lubrication property without biofilm‐induced drag and corrosion in marine environments, indicating the requirement of multifunctionality in liquid‐repellent surfaces.…”

“…Superhydrophobic fabrics are promising to reduce or even avoid the use of detergents because of their self-cleaning property ( Cheng et al., 2019 ; Lim et al., 2010 ; Liu et al., 2020 , 2021 ). Many methods such as chemical vapor deposition, dip-coating and surface grafting have been developed to fabricate superhydrophobic fabrics ( Deng et al., 2010 ; Li et al., 2016a ; Xue et al., 2015 ; Zhang et al., 2019 ).…”
