One‐step preparation of black polystyrene particles via in situ suspension polymerization

Abstract: A facile one‐step technique of preparing black polystyrene (PS) was developed by in situ suspension polymerization in which polymerization of styrene was conducted in the presence of modified carbon black (CB). A series of uniform black PS particles had been synthesized with this method. Morphology and dispersion stability of the various CBs were investigated by both scanning electron microscopy and spectrophotometric analysis. The results of thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of P… Show more

“…All these characteristics indicate the presence of the ACOOH group. Compared with the spectrum of pure PMMA, the spectrum of PMMA/graphite composite microsphere [ Figure 3(c)] at 1450-1650 cm 21 arose sight offsets and the intensity of the peak at 698 cm 21 was obviously weakened, which was contributed to the interaction between PMMA and graphite. 23 Furthermore, compared with the raw graphite [ Figure 3(a)], the characteristic peaks in the spectra of pure PMMA and PMMA/graphite do not appear in the curve of raw graphite, implying the successful preparation of PMMA/graphite composite particles.…”

“…22 The peaks at 1000-1200 cm 21 are attributed to the stretching vibration of the CAO group of PMMA. In addition, in the range of 2600-3300 cm 21 , a broad and strong AOH absorption band appears, at the same time, the peaks at 1706-1720 and 1210-1320 cm 21 are attributed to the stretching vibration of C@O and CAO, respectively. All these characteristics indicate the presence of the ACOOH group.…”

“…Polymerization procedure PS nanocomposites were synthesized by suspension polymerization, following the basic method and recipe ( Table 1) described previously [18,19], with some minor experimental adaptations. Suspension polymerization was carried out in a 500-mL jacketed glass reactor, under atmospheric pressure.…”

“…In previous studies, additives such as layered double hydroxides (LDHs) [17], carbon black [18,19], montmorillonite (MMT), and so on [20] were modified firstly in order to increase compatibility with monomers, and well-dispersed polymer composites were obtained via suspension polymerization. In addition, the reaction system was more stable.…”
