One step ion exchange process for the radiochemical separation of americium, plutonium and neptunium in sediments

Abstract: A radiochemical separation is presented for americium, plutonium and neptunium from sediment samples by using an unique anionic exchange process. An oxidation-reduction step was introduced in the classical procedure of the radiochemical determination of transuranic elements in order to control the valence of the separated elements.

“…Because of the high selectivity of the resin for Pu(IV), very often a single chromatographic separation provides sufficient purity for the analysis. 135 Qu et al, 98 Pilvi€ o, 95 Michel et al, 29,78 Komosa et al, 136 Solatie et al, 137,55 Hrnecek et al, 34,138 Viogue et al, 139 Berlioz et al, 140 LaRosa et al, 65 Ageyev et al, 79,89 Giardina et al, 69 Lee, 131 Jakopic et al, 35 and Michel et al 78 Anion exchange procedures for Pu separation have received wide application not only in R spectrometry but in ICPMS methods (see in the monograph of Kim et al 101 ).…”

“…The column was then washed with 100 ml 8 M HNO 3 to remove mainly Am, Cm and with 100 ml 10 M HCl to desorb Th. Finally, Pu was stripped off the resin with 100 ml 0.1 M NH 4 Ie10 M HCl [5,6]. The eluate was evaporated to dryness; a few drops of H 2 O 2 were added to eliminate iodide.…”

“…Alpha spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) have been employed to determine the concentration of 237 Np . Alpha spectrometry is one of the traditional measurement techniques for actinides and has been widely applied to nuclear and environmental , samples. Because of its low background capability, alpha spectrometry is suitable for environmental samples, which contain extremely low amounts of 237 Np.…”
