One‐step functionalization of an ethylene/propylene random copolymer with two different reactive groups

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The efficiency of a macromolecular compatibilizer for reactive blending is strongly dependent on its potentiality of producing a grafted or block copolymer during processing. For the preparation of such a compatibilizer, the grafting of two different reactive groups onto the backbones of ethylene/propylene copolymer macromolecules was performed. The ethylene/propylene (70/30) copolymer was then processed in a Brabender mixer at 190°C in the presence of a mixture of maleic anhydride and diethylmaleate … Show more

“…Probably during blending, MEM was converted into the more reactive maleic anhydride prior to the grafting [15] [16]. However, the approximated FD was higher for lower MEM/DCP ratios (obtained by increasing the amount of DCP at constant amount of MEM), in agreement with results obtained for polyolefins [13] [17 -20].…”

“…The 1700 -1900 cm À1 range of the IR spectrum was analyzed by a deconvolution approach [8] [13]. In this case, we considered four bands due to the grafted groups and one due to the partial overlapping with the amide-I band (1640 cm…”

“…The poly(propylene-co-ethylene) CO-034 with 22.3 mol% propylene ( 1 H NMR spectroscopy) and 10% crystallinity (determined by DSC analysis) (Enichem Elastomeri, San Donato Milanese, Italy) was functionalized with diethylmaleate (DEM) by using a wellknown procedure reported in literature to obtain a functionalized product (EPM-g-DEM, FD (functionalization degree) = 1.4-1.5% by mole as evaluated by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy [33] (Fig. 1).…”
