Purpose: To conduct a study of epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of urethral strictures at Yalgado Ouedraogo University Teaching Hospital. Patients and methods: It was about a retrospective and descriptive study conducted in the urology division of Yalgado Ouedraogo Hospital from October 1 st 2009 to September 30 th 2014. All the patients, included in this study, had a urethral stricture confirmed by the voiding retrograde cystourethrogram (VCUG) or during surgical intervention with useful surgical report and medical file. Results: During the period of study, 127 complete medical records were found. The hospital prevalence was 10.1%. The average age of the patients was 50.5 (from 3 to 80 years). 55.6% of the patients were from rural areas. Dysuria and urinary retention were the major causes of consultation with respectively 66.7% and 33.3%. The aetiology of urethral stricture was infectious in 71.4% of the cases. The VCUG permitted to objectify the characteristics of the stenosis. The urethral stenoses were single in the majority of the cases, about 88.8% of cases. The bulbar urethral stricture was the major location. Escherichia coli was isolated in 77.7% of the urinary infections. The majority of patients (61.9%) had undergone open surgery including 39.7% end to end anastomosis. No endoscopic treatment was recorded. Conclusion: The urethral stenosis is frequent in our division. Its major aetiology is infectious. The treatment is dominated by open surgery in our context.

Background:Several authors have demonstrated regional and temporal changes in the demographics of urethral stricture and its management.Objectives:To assess the changes in the demographics of the patients and the evolution of the management of urethral stricture in this institution.Subjects and Methods:This is a retrospective study. The files of all the men who were diagnosed with urethral stricture from May 2006 to April 2016 were retrieved from the database of the records department of the hospital. The predictor variables assessed included age at presentation, occupation, etiology, presenting symptoms, stricture site, length of stricture, treatment method, year of treatment, complications of treatment, result of urine microscopy and sensitivity, comorbidities, and social habits of the patients. The outcome variables were the proportion of men in relation to the predictor variables and the test of correlation (P = 0.05 and below significant). Analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.Results:Forty-six patients were diagnosed as having urethral stricture within the study period. All were males. The mean age was 53.11 years (standard deviation 17.63852) with a range from 19 to 96. There were 4 (8.7%) students, 11 (23.9%) civil servants, 4 (8.7%) businessmen, 3 (6.5%) military men, and 24 (52.2%) others who were essentially artisans. Majority of them (68.9%) presented with lower urinary tract symptoms while Escherichia coli was the most commonly cultured organism from their urine (17.4%). The most common single etiology was urethritis (30.4%). From 2013 onward, there was an abrupt transition from conservative treatment using dilatation which dropped from 38.9% to 17.9%. More complex surgeries such as buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty for bulbar strictures and two-stage repair for penile strictures increased from 11.1% to 57.1%.Conclusion:Urethritis is still the most common single etiological factor in urethral stricture disease in this rural community. Artisans such as drivers and mechanics were the most commonly afflicted. There was an abrupt transition from the old conservative methods of treatment to complex urethroplasties within the study period.

We conducted a cross-sectional study between February 1 st , 2012 and September 30, 2012 at Bobo-Dioulasso University Teaching hospital. The target population was all patients seen at the emergency services for acute urinary retention. Among the 155 patients admitted for urological emergencies, 104 (67.1%) had acute urinary retention. The average age of patients was 65 years, ranging from 23 to 89 years and the majority was more than 60 years old (77.8%) and lived in rural areas (64.4%). Prostate tumor pathology and urethral stricture were the most frequent diagnosis, and the renal function was impaired in 33.7% of cases. Urethrovesical drainage, cystocatheterism, and suprapubic cystostomy were the treatment approach in 56.0%, 28.0% and 15.2% of the cases. Acute urinary retention is the most common urological emergency and many complications are associated with urethrovesical sounding. These complications should therefore be prevented by improving acute urinary care.
