An attempt has been made in this review to provide some insights into the possible adsorption mechanisms of hexavalent chromium onto layered double hydroxides-based adsorbents by critically examining the past and present literature. Layered double hydroxides (LDH) nanomaterials are typical dual-electronic adsorbents because they exhibit positively charged external surfaces and abundant interlayer anions. A high positive zeta potential value indicates that LDH has a high affinity to Cr(VI) anions in solution through electrostatic attraction. The host interlayer anions (i.e., Cl -, NO3 -, SO4 2-, and CO3 2-) provide a high anion exchange capacity (53-520 meq/100g) which is expected to have an excellent exchangeable capacity to Cr(VI) oxyanions in water. Regarding the adsorptioncoupled reduction mechanism, when Cr(VI) anions make contact with the electron-donor groups in the LDH, they are partly reduced to Cr(III) cations. The reduced Cr(III) cations are then adsorbed by LDH via numerous interactions, such as isomorphic substitution and complexation. Nonetheless, the adsorption-coupled reduction mechanism is greatly dependent on: (1) the nature of divalent and trivalent salts utilized in LDH preparation, and (2) the types of interlayer anions (i.e., guest intercalated organic anions). The low Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area of LDH (1.80-179 m 2 /g) suggests that pore filling played an insignificant role in Cr(VI) adsorption. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of LDH (Q o max) toward Cr(VI) was significantly affected by the used inorganic salt natures and synthetic methods of LDH. The Q o max values range from 16.3 mg/g to 726 mg/g. Almost all adsorption processes of Cr(VI) by LDH-based adsorbent occur spontaneously (∆G° <0) and endothermically (∆H° >0) and increase the randomness (∆S° >0) in the system. Thus LDH has much potential as a material that can effectively remove anion pollutants, especially Cr(VI) anions in industrial wastewater.

The effects of co-existing anions (NO or SO) on the removal of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), representing anionic organic pollutants, by Ca-based layered double hydroxide (CaAl-LDH-Cl) are investigated to provide fundamental insights on the ionic surfactant removal in the presence of co-existing anions, and facilitate the establishment of a practical and advanced water treatment for environmental remediation. The SO system shows higher adsorption capacity (4.43 mmol·g) and larger d-spacing of adsorption resultant (3.4 nm) than the control system with no co-existing anion (3.64 mmol·g, 3.25 nm) and the NO system (3.82 mmol·g, 3.27 nm). The macroscopic and microscopic analyses reveal that, NO had a little influence on the SDS removal due to strong electrolysis, while SO could significantly promote the SDS removal. Moreover, the reaction mechanism varies under different molar ratios of DS/SO.

The use of functional material can help mitigate the pollution by heavy metals, which presents an array of risks to human production and life. This work provides a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on functionalized layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a heavy metal absorption material, by synthesizing the information from a total of 141 relevant publications published since 2005. LDH provides a potentially highly efficient method to adsorb heavy metal ions, which is simple to prepare and of low cost. The lack of functional groups and structural components of pristine LDH, however, limits the absorption capacity and widespread applications of LDH. Through intercalation, surface modification, or loading on substrates, functional groups or structural components are introduced into the pristine LDH to prepare functionalized LDH. In this process, the hydroxyl group and the valence state of [Mg(OH)6] octahedrons play a crucial role. Functionalized LDH can be endowed with selective absorption capacity and enhanced stability and recyclability. After adsorbing heavy metal ions, functionalized LDH can be readily separated from the liquid phase. These aspects are discussed, along with the structure and composition, shape and size, and synthesis methods and research tools of LDH. This work concludes with the discussion of preparation and utilization and a look to the future in terms of identified research needs regarding the preparation, use, and recycling (or upcycling) of economical and environmental-friendly LDH.
