One Pot Synthesis of Au_ZnO Core‐Shell Nanoparticles Using a Zn Complex Acting as ZnO Precursor, Capping and Reducing Agent During the Formation of Au NPs

Abstract: Semiconducting ZnO nanostructures show a wide band gap, a large free exciton binding energy, high electron mobility and are excellent for ultraviolet detection. Noble metals absorb visible light and produce localized surface plasmon resonance useful to enhance visible photodetection. Therefore, the coupling of gold nanoparticles and the wide-band-gap ZnO semiconductor represents the moist suited way to enhance photodetection. The Au_ZnO system has already been obtained by multiple-step syntheses that involve t… Show more

“…The synthesis of Au NPs capped with ZnO NPs was performed as previously reported. 6 In particular, an appropriate quantity of zinc citrate Zn 3 (C 6 H 5 O 7 ) 2 ·2H 2 O [hereafter Zn 3 (Cit) 2 ] was introduced into a three-necked flask and kept in the refrigerator at 5 °C. After 1 day, the mixture was totally clear (zinc citrate is more soluble in cold water than in warm water), and the measured pH was 6.50.…”

“…XPS analysis confirms the ZnO presence in the external shell and Figure 5a shows the Zn 2p 3/2 (1024.0 eV) spin-orbit component, typically associated to Zn 2+ ions in ZnO [38][39][40][41]. The oxygen 1s peak (Figure 5b) is constituted by two main components: the component at lower binding energy is associated to Zn-O states (530.2 eV) [42,43], while the other at higher binding energy (533.2 eV) is due to presence of hydroxyl groups onto the sample surface [32,33].…”
