One-dimensional photonic crystals: fabrication, responsiveness and emerging applications in 3D construction

Abstract: a One dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC), which is a periodical nanostructure with a refractive index distribution along one direction is widely studied by scientists. In this review, the material and fabrication methods of 1DPC fabrication are summarized. The applications are listed with a special emphasis on sensing platform and photovoltaic devices together with full color display. After that, some typical 3D ordered structures with stacked layers are highlighted, the fabrication method is also described a… Show more

“…In the last decade, many PhC structures were demonstrated to be effective transducers for chemical and biological molecules, as well as for physical stimuli like pressure and temperature . The sensing process relies on the modification of the PhC optical response triggered by external perturbations affecting the lattice periodicity, its dielectric function or the dielectric environment.…”

“…DBRs are indeed made of alternated thin films of different dielectric materials. This simplicity makes them the only PhCs that can take advantage of large area growths (see Section ) . Such fabrication methods are unconceivable with bulky inorganic DBRs and might reduce processing costs and enhance customizability, also on industrial scale, thus adding unprecedented market opportunities.…”

“…Polymer鈥恇ased DBRs are composed by alternating layers of different polymers, whose thicknesses or cross鈥恖inking can vary when an analyte interact with them, giving rise to reversible changes in the optical signal. In the literature there are multiple examples of pH, ions, temperature, pressure and organic vapors sensors based on polymers or hydrogels that change their conformation upon exposure and biosensors based in the same principle . These sensors present a high sensitivity and low detection limits but since they are composed exclusively by organic material, they may be degraded in operating conditions.…”
