International audienceThe ecological environment of three aquatic rodents was studied in the French Ardennes region. Two species, the coypu () and the common muskrat (), are invasive. By contrast the native European beaver () was extirpated from the region, subsequently reintroduced, and currently is protected. The aim of this study was to compare the ecological requirements of these three species and predict their future range distributions. We studied the relationship between the species and describe the characteristics of waterways and riparian vegetation in 29 sampling sites. Coypus and muskrats were observed in a variety of riparian habitats and their probability of detection appeared to be independent of waterway width, bank height or bank slope. The availability of numerous herbaceous plants, known to be consumed by these species, may facilitate their settlement. Muskrats are widespread on the French Ardennes waterways, but coypus have not yet colonised the northern part of the region. On the other hand, the beaver was observed primarily in the widest waterways with high banks, where woody plant species, such as , and , are found in abundance. Potentially favourable sites for beaver and coypu settlement were analysed to suggest appropriate management according to each species' status. However, the number of sample sites is weak, especially for sites with beaver, limiting our conclusion

Getting dirty is a fundamental problem, and one for which there are few solutions, especially across the enormous range of animal size. How do both a honeybee and a squirrel get clean? In this Review, we discuss two broad types of cleaning, considered from the viewpoint of energetics. Non-renewable cleaning strategies rely upon the organism as an energy source. Examples include grooming motions, wet-dog shaking or the secretion of chemicals. Renewable cleaning strategies depend on environmental sources of energy, such as the use of eyelashes to redirect incoming wind and so reduce deposition onto the eye. Both strategies take advantage of body hair to facilitate cleaning, and honeybees and squirrels, for example, each have around 3 million hairs. This hair mat increases the area on which particles can land by a factor of 100, but also suspends particles above the body, reducing their adhesion and facilitating removal. We hope that the strategies outlined here will inspire energy-efficient cleaning strategies in synthetic systems.

We report observations of Beavers (Castor canadensis) foraging and feeding on discarded Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) carcasses within the confines of the Susitna River drainage in southcentral Alaska on three separate occasions between 1999 and 2004. In all three instances, Beavers were observed actively seeking out freshly discarded carcasses or transporting “fresh” salmon carcasses in their mouths. In one instance, Beavers were seen using their dextrous forefeet to “handle” chunks of salmon while hunched over carcasses and in this case we actually witnessed Beavers “chewing” and ingestion was assumed. In the other two instances, Beavers were observed swimming with salmon carcasses in their mouths. Though unique within the framework of Beaver foraging ecology, we suggest this behavior may be a fairly common strategy employed by Beavers in Alaskan streams and rivers to take advantage of a seasonally superabundant source of protein.
