Ondansetron and Dolasetron Provide Equivalent Postoperative Vomiting Control After Ambulatory Tonsillectomy in Dexamethasone-Pretreated Children

Abstract: The efficacy of a single dose of prophylactic ondansetron versus dolasetron in conjunction with dexamethasone was studied on posttonsillectomy retching/vomiting and 48-h recovery in children 2-12 yr old. Compared with placebo, ondansetron and dolasetron produced comparable reductions in the incidence of retching/vomiting and the need for rescue antiemetics.

“…In a comparative study, dolasetron 0.5 mg kg -1 (maximum 25 mg) was as effective as ondansetron 0.15 mg kg -1 (maximum 4 mg) for the prevention of POV in children who had received dexamethasone 1 mg kg -1 (maximum 25 mg). Both antiserotonins, administered IV before the initiation of tonsillectomy, were more effective than placebo [51].…”

“…One trial comparing granisetron and ondansetron and another comparing granisetron, tropisetron and ondansetron in children undergoing chemotherapy found no significant differences in efficacy outcomes 83,84. Three trials have compared dolasetron and ondansetron in children undergoing surgical procedures and these also showed no significant difference in terms of efficacy 8587. There has been no controlled trial directly comparing ramosetron and ondansetron.…”
