Oncohematological diseases in the Vale do Paraíba, State of São Paulo

Abstract: BackgroundBased on the necessity of detailed information that supports effective strategies to improve cancer outcomes in the different regions of Brazil, the aims of this study were to report demographic aspects and to calculate the prevalence and incidence rates of oncohematological diseases in the region of Vale do Paraíba.MethodsThis is a multicentric prospective study carried out from October 2009 to March 2010. A total of 500 over 19-year-old patients were enrolled. Data such as type of healthcare insura… Show more

“…This apparent disagreement may reflect both the heterogeneity of the Brazilian population due to miscegenation and/or the restricted analysis performed in this study, as it focused on hotspot mutations only. MDS is under-diagnosed in Brazil, 27 which may also contribute to the differences in mutation frequency observed in the present study. The importance of the molecular analysis in a heterogeneous group of diseases such as MDS is undisputable, especially for improving diagnosis and prognosis.…”

“…It is possible that a significant decline could not be demonstrated for younger patients because death rates were consistently low over the years. Moreover, in another study regarding demographic characteristics of hematological malignancies in the Vale do Paraíba, 11 it was demonstrated that the period between the first symptoms and definitive diagnosis of the disease in this age range was greater than two months in 65% of the cases; a delay in receiving a proper diagnosis which consequently worsens the chances of successful chemotherapy may explain these findings. With regard to older patients, improvements in early death rates and long term survival were demonstrated even in older patients with AML 9 ; the fall in mortality rates with advancing age points to an increase in the quality of care, suggesting that old patients may be receiving optimal treatment for their conditions in this region.…”

“…We recently reported on the demographic characteristics, prevalence and incidence of oncohematological diseases in the Vale do Paraíba, State of São Paulo. ( 1 ) However, there are insufficient data to provide specific information on survival rates of patients with oncohematological diseases in this region. Against this background, the Grupo de Onco-Hematologia do Vale do Paraíba (GOHV) set out to assess the survival of patients with subtypes of lymphoid neoplasms and acute non-promyelocytic leukemia (AML).…”
