Oncogenes of Rna Tumor Viruses as Determinants of Cancer

Abstract: Abstract.-Evidence from sero-epidemiological studies and from cell culture studies supports the hypothesis that the cells of many, and perhaps all, vertebrates contain information for producing C-type RNA viruses. It is postulated that the viral information (the virogene), including that portion responsible for transforming a normal cell into a tumor cell (the oncogene), is most commonly transmitted from animal to progeny animal and from cell to progeny cell in a covert form. Carcinogens, irradiation, and the … Show more

“…Even with such advances in the understanding of the disease, it was the late 19 th century before the German scientist Rudolph Virchow realised that cancer cells derive from normal cells rather than from black bile or lymph fluid, as had previously been believed. After the discovery of the 'cancercausing' sarcoma virus by Rous in 1909 3,4 research into genetics continued and the hypothetical gene thought to be responsible for a cell becoming cancerous was named an oncogene 5 . In the 1960s the src (sarcoma) oncogene was discovered in Rous's sarcoma virus (RSV) 6 and in 1975 this oncogene was found in not only cancerous cells 7 , but also in normal healthy cells 8 .…”

“…During the 1960s, it was first suggested that every cancer resulted from expression of conserved viral transforming genes, named oncogenes at that time (Huebner and Todaro, 1969). Then the first oncogene was finally described: SRC (for 'sarcoma'), a gene responsible for tumor induction upon integration into the host genome (Stehelin et al, 1976).…”
