Oncocytic cystadenoma of the parotid gland with prominent signet‐ring cell features

Abstract: A case of distinctive benign cystadenoma of the parotid gland composed of several different morphological components is presented. The most conspicuous morphological component and the largest part of the neoplasm was represented by solid sheets of oncocytic cells surrounded by myoepithelial cell layer. Most oncocytic cells possessed large intracytoplasmic vacuoles with the nuclei displaced towards the periphery, imparting them with a striking signet-ring cell appearance. The size of the intracytoplasmic vacuol… Show more

“…The lining epithelium of Oncocytic Cystadenoma may focally be admixed with cuboidal or columnar cells [10]. One case of Oncocytic Cystadenoma having prominent signet ring cell component has been reported in literature [20]. Some cases of papillary oncocytic cystadenoma in minor salivary glands have been reported in literature [5,21].…”

“…2 One case of oncocytic cystadenoma having prominent signet ring cell component has been reported in literature. 8 Some cases of papillary oncocytic cystadenoma in minor salivary glands have been reported in literature. 8,9 But in the present case PTAH positivity was restricted to normal salivary gland, ruling out the presence of oncocytes in the tumor proper.…”

“…8 Some cases of papillary oncocytic cystadenoma in minor salivary glands have been reported in literature. 8,9 But in the present case PTAH positivity was restricted to normal salivary gland, ruling out the presence of oncocytes in the tumor proper. The presence of oncocytes in the salivary gland could be explained by metaplastic transformation of cells in response to adverse changes, probably the adjacent tumor component with the normal cells losing their original specialization.…”

“…Al corte, se observan múltiples espacios quísticos pequeños o un único quiste grande rodeado de lóbulos de tejido glandular o conectivo 3 . Su relativa infrecuencia se ve reflejada en su escasa mención en la literatura 2,5 , y específicamen-te del CA de parótida sólo existen reportes aislados destacando su rareza 4 . Se presenta un caso de CA de parótida con especial atención a sus caracterís-ticas histomorfológicas y a su diagnóstico diferencial de otros tumores salivales.…”
