On Visualization of Cocitation Networks

Abstract: The visualization of a cocitation network is a useful technique for information scientists. The technique will help to illustrate the intellectual structure of a given knowledge domain. We hope our results will improve on current tools with regard to user interface interactivity and scale better for larger data sets. We developed a tool, with the visualizing cocitation network in mind, by using an open-sourced toolkit for interactive information visualization to address some of these inadequacies. This tool ex… Show more

“…Visualizing a co-citation network is valuable in depicting the intellectual structure of a knowledge domain (Chen and Hsieh, 2007). Rooted in graph theory, social network analysis has been introduced as a body of methods for examining the relational traits of social structures (Scott, 1991).…”

“…To explore the evolution of social network research after the above-mentioned study, we propose a novel visualization approach. While it is very similar to previous approaches (Small, 1999;Brandes and Willhalm, 2002;Chen and Hsieh, 2007), it differs in two important aspects: the way in which citation linkages are converted into a distance measure and the way in which a visualization is obtained from these distances.…”

“…Adding zoom and filters capacities can however greatly increase the readability and usability of this layout. 48 By encoding the publication year with color, node-links layouts can also display the evolution of citation networks over time. 49 By instead encoding the publication authors with color, it is also possible to explore the relationships between authors for a subset of publications.…”
