On theory, technique and text: guidelines and suggestions on publishing International Human Resource Management Research

Abstract: Publishing international human resource management (IHRM) research continues to be a challenge for seasoned as much as junior faculty. Quantitative and qualitative studies exploring HRM-related topics involving multiple countries or complex contextual factors raise issues of developing an appropriate research question, presenting multilevel methodologies, and making a contribution in which context stands central. In this Editorial, we reflect on such issues as discussed at the 2 nd Global Conference on Interna… Show more

“…For instance, Budhwar, Varma and Patel (2016) lamented that there is a "need to understand if the HRM being practiced in the region has been developed locally, or at least adapted to the local context, versus simply borrowed from the West and implemented locally" (p. 312). This is increasingly important in the Asian context, as Asian countries vary from their Western counterparts in terms of their sociocultural, economic, political, organizational and institutional structures (Barkema, Chen, George, Luo, & Tsui, 2015;Raghuram et al, 2017). Therefore, it is vital to gain rich insights into the nature of psychological contract functions within organizations in Asia while taking into account, the expansive contextual influences at play.…”

“…In international business, qualitative studies seem appropriate to capture the complex processes under investigation (Welch and Welch, 2012). Moreover, qualitative research is an essential tool for exploring HRM processes and identifying patterns of relationships within highly contextualized settings (Raghuram et al, 2017;Welch and Bj€ orkman, 2015). However, studies adopting a qualitative approach to international business are rare (Bj€ orkman .…”

“…The dominant data collection technique for quantitative studies is surveys (for questionnaire design, see Rowley, 2014). This is also true for IHRM research; however, due to the international dimension herein, special emphasis should be given to the particularities of research designs across national and cultural boundaries (for further information, see, for example, Byrne and Van de Vijver, 2010; Harkness et al, 2003; Raghuram et al, 2017). Cascio (2012) points to the importance of translation, conceptual, functional and metric equivalence.…”
