On the Use of Web Mapping Platforms to Support the Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Old Urban Areas

Abstract: European countries are affected by various levels of seismic hazard, including many areas with medium to high seismicity. Heavy damage over large areas has been observed in past earthquakes in these countries, particularly in masonry buildings located in historical centers, confirming the need for enhancing the current knowledge on the seismic vulnerability of these constructions, so more informed technical and political decisions towards the mitigation of the risk can be taken. However, the characterization o… Show more

“…Examples of the application of such a system are the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) [50], the HAZUS-MH platform [51], the CAPRA Probabilistic Risk Assessment Platform [52], and the ARCH DSS WebGIS Decision Supporting System [53]. Web mapping platforms can also support the assessment through simplified evaluations based on visual inspections, provided the accuracy of the observations and the dimension of the inventory comply with the evaluation purpose [54]. Sometimes, the dissemination of software for data storage can be a viable option for data management, as for the CLE form [55] and the LOG-IDEAH post-earthquake tool for architectural assets [56].…”

“…The translation of the described procedures from paper modules to digital format, such as applications for mobile phones or software tools for personal computers [16,46,47], as well as the usage of online resources [48], simplifies data management and storage. These systems generally exploit the client-server architecture, with a graphical interface provided by the software or the app on the local device and a central database on a remote server.…”
