On the use and value of new media and how medical students assess their effectiveness in learning anatomy

Abstract: The new media have become widely used tools in medical instruction today. But are they regarded as useful by students training to become medical doctors? What are students' most important criteria for a good CD-ROM or valuable Internet resources? To answer these questions, and to obtain definite data on the use of new media, we distributed a questionnaire to preclinical medical and dental students of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. The evaluation of 397 questionnaires demonstrates that 94.… Show more

“…This was particularly encouraging because these students had never received formal training in microstructure and were thus at a disadvantage when attempting to detect and discriminate elements of a histological image (Lei et al, 2005). Questions related to navigation, simplicity of display, and appropriate graphics received relatively high positive scores, results similar to those reported by Jastrow and Hollinderbä umer (2004) in a survey Table 1.…”

“…In medical education, they are of particular interest for the study of anatomy. In this field, the availability of visual information is essential to obtain a functional three-dimensional (3D) image of the human body and its tissues 1 . The tremendous growth of medical information publication available in various formats as fast as possible is needed which definitely requires information and communication technology.…”

“…In the study, students were also satisfied with the computer parameters and Internet connection, but some years ago it was a barrier for them in Poland [4]. Interestingly, over 60% of students use the Internet weekly for professional purposes; our students seem to use it more rarely [10]. But this Internet is still a secondary source of medical information 223 difference is not dramatic.…”

“…They evaluated even better the Internet use (most of them as 2 points in the same scale). However, their mean age was 21 years, which of course also influenced the results [10]. Our study group had a mean age of more than 32 years.…”
