A b s t r a c t . I n the numerical investigations of pulsed intracavity absorption spectroscopy performed hitherto, mechanisms ensuring mode coexistence have been disregarded. I n the present paper the effect of a restriction of mode competition due to such mechanisms (e.g. a n inhomogeneous contribution of the laser line width or the spatial hole burning of standing waves) on the detection sensitivity is studied by numerical analysis for short pumping pulses, starting from equations derived and solved, for steady-state conditions, already in [7]. These equations contain a parameter v which is characteristic for the relative strength of the mechanisms responsible for mode coexistence. Our main result is that the detection sensitivity as a function of pulse duration for v $; 0 tends to an asymptotic value which decreases for increasing u and is approached a t pulses whose length is the shorter the larger the value of v. Bei den bisher durchgefuhrten numerischen Untersuchungen ZUP Absorptionsspektroskopie innerhalb eines Laserresonators im Impulsbetrieb fanden keine Mechanismen Berucksichtigung, die eine Modenkoexistenz bedingen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der EinfluB numerisch studiert, den eine EinschrLnkung der Modenkonkurrenz infolge derartiger Mechanismen (2.B. ein inhomogener Beitrag zur Linienbreite des Lasers oder das riiumliche ,,hole burning" von stehenden Wellen) bei Pumpen mit kurzen Impulsen auf die Nachweisempfindlichkeit besitzt. Den Ausgangspunkt bilden die schon in [7] abgeleiteten und fur den stationLen Fall gelosten Gleichungen, die einen die relative StLrke der fur eine Modenkoexistenz verantwortlichen Mechanismen pauschal kennzeichnenden Parameter v ehthalten. Unser wesentliches Resultat besteht darin, daS die Nachweisempfindlichkeit, als Funktion der Irnpulsdauer, fur 2) $; 0 einem asymptotischen Wert zustrebt, der mit wachsendem v abnimmt, wobei die SnnLherung bei um so kurzeren ImpulslLngen erfolgt, je groBer der Wert von v ist.

A b s t r a c t . In the last few years a very sensitive technique for the detection of very weak and narrow absorption lines has been developed which consists in placing the absorption cell inside the cavity of a laeer with a broad homogeneous emission line. In the present paper the corresponding enpancement in sensitivity, oompared to a single-pase extinction measurement, is discussed on the basis of numerical calculations for nanosecond pumping pulses. In particular, it is investigated how the length and intensity of the pulses and the quality and length of the cavity affect the detection sensitivity. Selektive Absorption innerhalb eines Laserresonators bei Pampen mit kurzen ImpulsenI n h a 1 t s u b e r s i o h t . In den letzten Jahren wurde eine sehr empfindliche Methode zur Meeeung aehr schwacher und schmaler Absorptionslinien entwickelt, die darin beeteht, daS dieAbsorptionskuvette im Innern des Resonators eines mit stark homogen verbreiterter Link &ahlenden Lasers angeorduet wird. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die damit verbundene Stei erung der Nachweisempfindlichkeitverglichen mit einer Absorptionsmeseung bei einmali em burchlauf der Absorptionskuvettefar den Fall von Nanosekunden-Pumpimpulsen an #and numerischer Rechnungen diskutiert. Im beaonderen wird untersucht, wie sich die Unge und Intensitat der Pumpimpulse sowie die Reeonatorgtite und -1ange auf die Nachweieempfindlicbkeit auswirkon.
