On the ternary fission of atomic clusters

Abstract: Comparison of ternary fission of the metallic cluster Na +++ 27 into equal fragments with binary fission is made by use of the Shell Correction Method. We conclude that favourable fission barriers and energy releases of that tripartition along with some dynamical properties make ternary fission a very attractive process for further investigation.

“…This fact supports the assumption that the interaction of the electron system with the collective ionic modes plays a rather essential part in dissipation, as, e.g., in the electron-phonon interaction in crystals. There is no need to assume that the phonon excitation will necessarily result into fission, though the two aspects are generically related to one another, so that fission is the ultimate form of a superposition of many of phonons in the limit of large amplitude oscillation [5]. The importance of the collective modes for the electron relaxation was also noted in ref.…”

“…In the light of recent experiments [4], we discuss the role played by the collective motion of the core in the electron-ion correlations. Our discussion is based on the LDM (see [9] and references cited in [5]) which is enough for the present purposes. We take into account surface and Coulomb energies.…”

“…It is worthy of noting that there was a tacit contradiction between theory and experimental search. From the theoretical point of view, the linear form of fissile nuclei is more favorable than a clover-leaf shape (e. g. [5] and refs. cited therein).…”

“…The idea of generic mechanism of TTF was expressed in Refs. [5,6,7], in contrast to the consecutive one. It is suggested that TTF develops along a special dynamical path to which the nucleus enters at the very beginning of fission.…”
