The phylogenetic position and generic composition of the moss family Plagiotheciaceae were explored using DNA sequence data from three genomes: plastid trnL‐F and rps4, mitochondrial nad5 intron and nuclear ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2. Our phylogenetic analyses included 35 terminals from Plagiotheciaceae and 71 outgroup taxa from a representative set of hypnalean moss families. The family Plagiotheciaceae is resolved in the early‐diverging Hypnales grade, together with Fontinalaceae, Habrodontaceae and several genera which are mainly distributed in the area of the former Gondwanan supercontinent. However, monophyly of the family can only be attained if the three Southern Hemisphere genera, Acrocladium, Catagonium and Rhizofabronia, are excluded. Ancestral state reconstruction for eight morphological characters reveals that many characters used to delimit the family, such as a lack of pseudoparaphyllia and rhizoids inserted in the leaf axils, were already present in the ancestor of Hypnales. Dispersal–vicariance analysis suggests that Plagiotheciaceae and Fontinalaceae have their ancestral distributions in the area of the former Laurasian supercontinent. As the analyses also reveal a Gondwanan distribution for the ancestor of Hypnales in general, Plagiotheciaceae and Fontinalaceae represent the first diverging Laurasian lineages in the order. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London

The first record of a new for the flora of Ukraine species Myurella sibirica is reported. The species was found on the slope of Maslyatyn Mt. (at 381 m a.s.l.) in the Kremenets Mountains National Nature Park (Ternopil Region). It grew among other mosses on the soil layers in the cracks of vertical limestone wall, under the canopy of Betula klokovii near the forest meadow. Myurella sibirica is quite rare in the mountains of Europe and more common in mountains of Asia and North America. The species is listed in The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (Vulnerable), Red Data Book of European Bryophytes (Endangered), European Red List of Mosses, Liverworts and Hornworts (Vulnerable) and several Red lists of European countries. Brief morphological characteristics, distinctions from other two species recorded in Ukraine (M. julacea and M. tenerrima), geographical distribution, ecological and coenotic peculiarities of the species, as well as original illustrations of the Ukrainian population are provided. Some issues on conservation of M. sibirica in Ukraine are discussed. The new record of M. sibirica is considered to represent a relict population.

The present study reports the complete mitochondrial genome of Myurella julacea (Schw€ agr.) Schimp. (GenBank accession number MT850126); the genome size was 104,979 bp. The gene arrangement was found to be similar to that in other bryophytes, and the genome consisted of 40 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 3 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and 24 transfer RNAs (tRNAs). The phylogenic relationship was analyzed by construction of a phylogenetic tree based on the mitogenome of M. julacea and 25 other bryophytes publicly available in GenBank. The complete mitogenome of M. julacea is expected to provide insights into the evolution of species belonging to the order Hypnales.
