On the Suitability of Using ANT Colony Optimization for Routing Multimedia Content over Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: This paper studies the suitability of using a meta-heuristic ant colony technique in routing multimedia content over wireless sensor networks. The presented technique is both energy and QoS-aware. Ant colony algorithm is used to find the optimal routing path. Optimality is in the sense of minimizing energy consumption and increasing link quality and reliability. The proposed approach results in minimizing energy consumption and prolonging the lifetime of the network. Moreover, the optimal path has a high link … Show more

“…Ant colonies are able to find the shortest path between their nest and a food source by depositing and reacting to the trail of pheromone to help guide future ants towards optimal paths to food [10,21]. The basic principles driving this system can also be applied to many combinatorial optimization problems like routing in data networks [2,33]. See Table 1.…”

“…problems in which the search space changes over time, leading to potential changes in the definition of the problem instance as well as the quality of the solutions already found, to name a few. One of the prominent and widely used such algorithms is the Ant system [22] and its enhancements [23][24][25][26] which have proved suitable to design high performance routing protocols for communication networks [27][28][29], including wireless networks [30][31][32][33][34], and to find optimal solutions to other types of problems such as scheduling problems, assignment and layout problems, machine learning problems [35], to name a few. In this chapter, our focus is on investigating the use of ACO for designing energy-efficient routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks.…”
