On the Similarity of Pulsating and Accelerating Turbulent Pipe Flows

Abstract: The near-wall region of an unsteady turbulent pipe flow has been investigated experimentally using hot-film anemometry and two-component particle image velocimetry. The imposed unsteadiness has been pulsating, i.e., when a non-zero mean turbulent flow is perturbed by sinusoidal oscillations, and near-uniformly accelerating in which the mean flow ramped monotonically between two turbulent states. Previous studies of accelerating flows have shown that the time evolution between the two turbulent states occurs in… Show more

“…More recently, the transition nature of a transient turbulent flow starting from a turbulent flow has been demonstrated experimentally by Mathur et al [19] in a channel, and Sundstrom and Cervantes [20,21] in a circular pipe. The former focused on the transition physics, especially the abrupt changes in the length and time scales of turbulence as the transition occurs.…”

“…Sundstrom and Cervantes [20] obtained an analytical solution for the pre-transition phase of an accelerating flow and demonstrated that the velocity profile possess a self-similarity during the early stages. Sundstrom and Cervantes [21] on the other hand compared experimental results of accelerating and pulsating flows. They have found that, like accelerating flows, the accelerating phase of the pulsating flow also demonstrated distinct staged development, namely, a laminar-like development followed by rapid generation of turbulence.…”

“…Sundstrom and Cervantes (2018) experimentally studied hot film by pulsating source in the unsteady turbulent pipe. The result showed that the Reynolds stresses dependent on the amplitude of pulsation.…”
