The scale of a phenomenologically successful charge-symmetry-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction, that attributed to meson exchange with a ∆I = 1 rho-omega transition, is set by the Coleman-Glashow SU (2) breaking tadpole mechanism. A single tadpole scale has been obtained from symmetry arguments, electromagnetic meson and baryon measured mass splittings, and the observed isospin violating (∆I = 1) decay ω → π + π − . The hadronic realization of this tadpole mechanism lies in the I = 1 a 0 scalar meson. We show that measured hadronic and two-photon widths of the a 0 meson, with the aid of the Vector Meson Dominance model, recover the universal Coleman-Glashow tadpole scale.

Recent progress and new challenges in isospin physics with heavy-ion reactions

The ultimate goal of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion reactions with neutron-rich, stable and/or radioactive nuclei is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, particularly the isospin-dependent term in the equation of state, i.e., the density dependence of the symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade, and significant progress has been achieved both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, a number of phenomena or observables have been identified as sensitive probes to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Experimental studies have confirmed some of these interesting isospin-dependent effects and allowed us to constrain relatively stringently the symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities. The impacts of this constrained density dependence of the symmetry energy on the properties of neutron stars have also been studied, and they were found to be very useful for the astrophysical community. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, the study of isospin physics is expected to remain one of the forefront research areas in nuclear physics. We construct the charge symmetry violating (CSV) nucleon-nucleon potential induced by the ρ 0 -ω mixing due to the neutron-proton mass difference driven by the N N loop. Analytical expression for for the two-body CSV potential is presented containing both the central and non-central N N interaction. We show that the ρN N tensor interaction can significantly enhance the charge symmetry violating N N interaction even if momentum dependent off-shell ρ 0 -ω mixing amplitude is considered. It is also shown that the inclusion of form factors removes the divergence arising out of the contact interaction. Consequently, we see that the precise size of the computed scattering length difference depends on how the short range aspects of the CSV potential are treated.
