On the Role of Response Styles in the Study of Intraindividual Variability

Abstract: In a number of psychological disciplines, experience sampling studies are used to investigate when and why individuals vary in their cognitions, feelings, or personality states, to name just a few examples. However, to validly answer such research questions, researchers have to use reliable and valid measures of such intraindividual or within-person variability. Following Baird, Lucas, and Donnellan (2017), the present study uses data from two experience sampling studies to investigate whether response style v… Show more

“…This regards data from Samples 1 and 2 as well as Samples B and C; data from Sample A have not been used previously. Several studies with a statistical or methodological focus have relied on the data from Samples 1 or 2 (Eckes & Nestler, 2024;Nestler, 2020Nestler, , 2021Nestler, , 2022Nestler, , 2023Nestler & Blozis, 2024;Nestler et al, 2021;Nestler & Humberg, 2022). These studies have mainly concerned the conceptualization and statistical modeling of intraindividual variability but have not explored links between affective states and narcissism.…”

“…The computation of the standard deviation is based on the mean. Therefore, we calculated the mean of the usage of the 10 emotion regulation strategies for each stressor situation and controlled for the mean level endorsements for each participant in all models that included the between-strategy SDs by including the means as a control variable (Baird et al, 2006; Nestler et al, 2021). The resulting (mean level controlled) between-strategy variability coefficients indicate the extent to which people use only few emotion regulation strategies intensively and the remaining strategies significantly less or not at all (see also Figure 1).…”
