On the Robust Parametric Detection of EEG Artifacts in Polysomnographic Recordings

Abstract: We present an open, parametric system for automatic detection of EEG artifacts in polysomnographic recordings. It relies on independent parameters reflecting the relative presence of each of the eight types of artifacts in a given epoch. An artifact is marked if any of these parameters exceeds a threshold. These thresholds, set for each parameter separately, can be adjusted via "learning by example" procedure (multidimensional minimization with computationally intensive cost function), which can be used to aut… Show more

“…Manual rejections of artifacts in dozens of overnight recordings would not fulfill the scientific criteria of repeatability, due to the low interexpert concordance. 26 To cope with this problem, we designed and implemented a custom, semiautomatic and algorithmic system, partially based on a previously implemented scheme. 26 Three main types of artifacts were considered:…”

“…To deal with this situation, we have developed a custom system consisting of correction of ocular artifacts by Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and rejection of epochs contaminated by other artifacts, partially based on an earlier approach. 12…”

“…This is not much higher than the agreement between experts, and the disagreement may thus reflect the inherent difficulty of the task rather than differences in technique or approach by different observers. Klekowicz et al (2009) made 22 comparisons between expert classifications (artifact vs. neural) based on the EEG time series from seven polysomnographic recordings and found an agreement of 0.92 in terms of the area under curve of the best fitting ROC curve. Of the 22 comparisons, four were between classifications made by the same expert at different points in time.…”
