Over the last years, understanding the implications of prospective thinking toward the future has become of increasing interest. This study aims to delve into the relation between dispositional optimism, one of the most relevant prospective constructs, and life satisfaction. Additionally, we also seek to prove the mediating effect of different cognitive and affective variables associated with both hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing on this relationship. A first study is conducted with 275 secondary students to assess the relationship between optimism and life satisfaction through self-control and grit (14.82, SD = 1.07), which indicates a mediating effect of grit but not of selfcontrol. A second study is carried out with 1,356 university students (21.5, SD = 2.35) to demonstrate the mediating effect of positive affect on dispositional optimism and life satisfaction. Results show a strong relationship between optimism and positive affect, but no mediating effect on life satisfaction. Finally, a third study comprising 371 secondary students (14.12, SD = 1.78) demonstrates the existence of a serial multiple mediation from gratitude and meaning in life over the relationship between optimism and life satisfaction. Implications are discussed in terms of how prospective variables like dispositional optimism may lead to an increase in subjective well-being (SWB) through different affective and cognitive mechanisms.

Background: Globally, breast cancer is the most common cancer type in terms of incidence for women. Women with breast cancer endure higher levels of psychological distress than other types of cancer because many lose their identity as a woman, which is an additional characteristic of their psychological distress. Research using phenomenology to explore "the meaning of life" is rare among women with breast cancer.Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of women with breast cancer on "the meaning of life." Methods: A phenomenological approach was used. Twenty-six women living with breast cancer drawn from a cancer treatment hospital in Taiwan participated in this study. A semistructured interview was utilized to collect the data, and Colaizzi's seven steps were used to analyze the data.Results: Four themes emerged: (a) value of overcoming suffering, (b) value of reciprocal love, (c) value of self-transcendence, and (d) value of spiritual comfort. This means that the participants defined "the meaning of life" through the lens of suffering from cancer, reciprocal love from their families and friends, uncovering and discovering creative pathways that transformed their pain while searching for the value of their existence, and seeking spiritual guidance from religion. Conclusions:The participants identified the most pivotal aspect of healing as transforming their pain and accepting value for their suffering. They acknowledged they could not change the fact that they had cancer, but they could learn to accept it as part of their lived experience. Healthcare professionals may use these four themes at a clinically appropriate time on women's journeys toward healing to inspire women with breast cancer to process their own unique "meaning of life."

Background: Research on suicide rarely focuses on protective factors. The goal of this systematic review was to assess the evidence of the associations between protective factors and reduced suicidality among older adults. Method: First, a scoping review was conducted to identify pertinent terms that refer to various protective factors against suicidality. A systematic review, following the PRISMA guidelines, was then conducted on a selection of 15 protective factors (e.g., perceived control, well-being and quality of life, life satisfaction, purpose-in-life, resilience, coping, religiosity, hope, self-regulation, sense of belonging, mattering, positive relationship, social support, social connectedness, and social participation), with separate searches performed on each factor in five databases. Empirical studies were eligible if participants were adults aged 60 years and over, and if the studies reported predictive statistical analysis. Results: A total of 70 studies were retained for the review. Suicidal ideation was the main outcome measure (91%). Significant associations were consistently observed between all protective factors and reduced suicidal ideations or behaviors, particularly for purpose-in-life, resilience, and positive relationships, indicating that these are solid components for suicide prevention. Using scales, instead of a single item, to measure protective factors (e.g. life satisfaction) was more efficient to capture the associations. On the other hand, results were similar whether studies used subjective (e.g., sense of belonging) or objective (e.g., social connectedness) measures. Conclusion: Protective factors were inversely associated with suicidal ideation. Improving protective factors is essential for the development of late-life suicide prevention and interventions, instead of merely focusing on risk factors.
