On the reliability of fungal materials used in studies on Ophiocordyceps sinensis

Abstract: Ophiocordyceps sinensis (≡Cordyceps sinensis) is one of the best known traditional Chinese medicines, with great benefits to human health and huge economic value. The reliability of fungal materials used in studies of the species is particularly important because contradictory results have been found in various studies in the past decades. Examination of fungal materials specified in reports on O. sinensis showed great variation in both sources and culture conditions of living strains. To test the reliability … Show more

“…HSM CGB999335 produced optimal growth at 16°C (Fig 4), consistent with previous observations that O . sinensis mycelium grows best at 15 and 18°C [15]. HSM biomass gradually decreased at temperatures above 16°C and limited growth was noticed at higher temperatures, consistent with previous work showing that O .…”

“…Several biological activities are based on extract, fractions and polysaccharides and there are discrepancies in structure determination of polysaccharides (Chen et al 2013). The fruit-body production in cultivation has not been successful yet and mycelia culture is the major source of studies (Dong & Yao 2011). In comparison to cultured mycelium, the natural O. sinensis undergoes cascade of events from the selection of host up to the formation of fruiting enduring extreme environmental conditions together with interaction with Cordyceps-associated species.…”
