On the relationship between a resource based measure of geodiversity and broad scale biodiversity patterns

Abstract: Geodiversity, (diversity of the geosphere) incorporates many of the environmental patterns and processes that are considered drivers of biodiversity. Components of geodiversity (climate, topography, geology and hydrology) can be considered in terms of their resource giving potential, where resources are taken as energy, water, space and nutrients. The total amount of these resources, along with their spatial and temporal variation, is herein proposed as a compound index of geodiversity that has the potential t… Show more

“…This reflects an emerging recognition of the links between biodiversity and particular 'geo-physical' settings (Anderson & Ferree 2010;Parks & Mulligan 2010;Hjort et al 2012). Conservation of geodiverse, heterogeneous landscapes should help to underpin the development of robust ecological networks and managed adaptation strategies and/or relocations.…”

“…Most habitats and species depend on the abiotic 'stage' on which they exist (Anderson and Ferree 2010), not only rare or specialised ones, and areas of high geodiversity and environmental heterogeneity tend to support high biodiversity (Parks and Mulligan 2010). This applies across a range of scales from global to fine scales (e.g.…”

“…The research problems undertaken since the turn of the 20th and 21st century, consider geodiversity integrated with the natural habitats and landscapes (silva 2004, jačková, romportl 2008, Alexandrowicz, Margielewski 2010, Parks, Mulligan 2010, Virtanen et al 2010, Pellitero et al 2010, Hjort et al 2012, Kistowski 2012, Hjort et al 2015, and even cultural heritage (Mazurek et al 2015). The preparation of a good zoning plan or landscape-ecological plan (Pauditšová, reháčková 2010(Pauditšová, reháčková , łowicki 2014 requires taking into account the existing and possibly appointing new nature reserves, specifying the directions of their management.…”
