Pugheadedness is widespread among different families and orders of Teleostei, such as the Ictaluridae (Siluriformes), Salmonidae (Salmoniformes), Labridae (Labriformes), Pomacanthidae, Epinephelidae and Moronidae (Perciformes), but is mostly restricted to marine fishes (Grinstead, 1971;Macieira & Joyeux, 2007;Francini-Filho & Amado-Filho, 2013;Jawad et al, 2014;Bueno et al, 2015;Schmitt & Orth, 2015). Pughead deformity has also been reported in cichlids (Eissa et al, 2009), but this is the first record in the genus Cichla and, apparently, the first scientific report of pughead deformity in a Neotropical freshwater fish not raised in captivity.…”
