“…The present case is similar to those reported from several fish species by different authors around the world (AL-Hassan, 1988;Jawad and Hosie, 2007;Macieira and Joyeux, 2007;Francini-Filho and Amado-Filho, 2013;Jawad et al, 2014;Schmitt and Orth, 2015;Sawayama and Takagi, 2016).…”

“…On the other hand, Buckland (1877) is believed to have published the earliest account on this case of abnormality in salmonids. Large number of publications have appeared to report on this condition in different species of fish (Hickey et al, 1977;Shariff et al, 1986;Al-Hassan, 1988;Jawad and Hosie, 2007;Macieira and Joyeux, 2007;Jawad et al, 2014;. Pughead deformity is an abnormal osteological condition that results in the aberration of the maxilla, premaxilla, or infraorbital bones, with variable degrees of severity (Hickey, 1972).…”

“…The present case of pughead anomaly in P. erythrinus represents the secondary of Hickey et al (1977) system. Unlike other cases of pughead reported from several fish species (AL-Hassan, 1988;Jawad and Hosie, 2007;Jawad et al, 2014), the present case looks mild as the mouth is closed and the fish can avoid several risks as this closure.…”

“…About 120 published reports of this anomaly are known, with several of them recorded by Dawson (1964Dawson ( , 1966Dawson ( , 1971. Pugheadedness is widespread among different families and orders of Teleostei, such as the Ictaluridae (Siluriformes), Salmonidae (Salmoniformes), Labridae (Labriformes), Pomacanthidae, Epinephelidae and Moronidae (Perciformes), but is mostly restricted to marine fishes (Grinstead, 1971;Macieira & Joyeux, 2007;Francini-Filho & Amado-Filho, 2013;Jawad et al, 2014;Bueno et al, 2015;Schmitt & Orth, 2015). Pughead deformity has also been reported in cichlids (Eissa et al, 2009), but this is the first record in the genus Cichla and, apparently, the first scientific report of pughead deformity in a Neotropical freshwater fish not raised in captivity.…”
