On the recently proposed mimetic Dark Matter

Abstract: Recently, an interesting gravitational model was proposed in order to mimic the effect of Dark Matter. Chamseddine and Mukhanov in the arXiv preprint 1308.5410 have separated the conformal mode of a physical metric in the form of a squared gradient of an auxiliary scalar field. Notably, the variational principle has given a more general equation of motion than that of purely Einsteinian relativity theory, with a possibility of reproducing an effective Dark Matter. In this short paper, we explain the nature of … Show more

“…And, upon any intrusions, its scalar sector can present many unexpected surprises. For example, somehow modifying the Einstein-Hilbert variational principle in its conformal part, one can have an arbitrary cosmological constant without interactions with the trace part of the stress tensor as in unimodular gravity [19], or be able to mimic the Dark Matter behaviour with modified gravitation [20,21,22]. Analysing the conformal sector in a gravitational model with several new degrees of freedom, it is sometimes possible to prove that it is healthy [23] despite the ghosts in other modes [24].…”

“…Recently it was proposed by Chamseddine and Mukhanov [10] that dark matter can be a result of gravitational modification of General Relativity, the so-called mimetic dark matter approach. The cosmological consequences were further studied in [11,12] and extended in various theoretical frameworks in [13][14][15][16][17]. Actually Ref.…”

“…[35]. Soon afterwards, it has been realized that the proposed scenario is equivalent to adding a Lagrange multiplier into the Einstein-Hilbert action [36]. This is the picture described by the action (1.1).…”
