System simulations are particularly useful when analyzing complex systems. Simulations are often cheaper and safer than physical tests of the actual system(s) of interest. Models can be additionally created for systems that do not exist to find solutions that are impossible to analyze experimentally in early life-cycle stages. Models used in system simulations require appropriate input data to give results with the required fidelity and, in the end, credibility. Integration is often challenging as each system commonly constitutes contributions from several engineering domains. Relying on relevant open standards for information exchange is seen as a means of mitigation. The results of the presented work encompass a developed methodology that allows Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results to be integrated into a simulator using system identification and open standards. Reduced Order Models (ROMs) are generated based on results from a CFD analysis. These ROMs are coupled to lumped parameter system simulation models through the mechanisms of the System Structure and Parameterization (SSP) and Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standards. In addition, several important factors to consider before using the proposed methodology are presented. These include the intended use of the ROM, knowing the flow inside the system, what resources are available, and any potential licensing issues.

Development of complex systems through the application of Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) will require the creation and maintenance of multiple models, created using multiple languages. Hence, structuring the models such that there is efficient support for incremental development requires some foresight. Having models with multiple or unclear purposes may introduce situations where parts of the organisation will ask for modification for representing a desired future system state, whereas other parts of the organisation require it to remain unchanged in order to represent the present state. This paper introduces a structure with associated terms and characteristics of the different model types in order to provide guidance to an organisation. In particular, it extends previous work on model tenses, capturing different time perspectives/purposes on the models, to also include model usage for keeping track of the actual state of a realised system instance. For example, the concepts of Digital Twin and Digital Shadow are discussed and conceptualised. As such, the contributions made in the paper allows an organisation to reason about the completeness of their modelling methodology and its applicability to support incremental development. Above all, the paper spells out clearly that for a complex heterogeneous system, any request for an update to “the model” will prompt the response “Excuse me Sir/Madam, which model?”.

Simulation devices have been used in aviation training for decades, probably more than in other industries. Embarking on this study, we aim to understand the relationship between the information quality provided by the information system (simulator) to pilots with the effect on situation awareness and trust in technology. Also, we aim to understand how experienced pilots with total flight and simulator hours affect their situation awareness. Furthermore, the study introduces a novel theoretical model to explore how situation awareness and trust in technology jointly impact individual pilot performance. We used structured equation modeling within the data retrieved from a survey of 233 pilots. Our results show a large effect on individual pilot performance in a simulator between situation awareness and information quality. Also, the impact on trust in technology is supported with a large effect by information quality. There is a medium effect between information quality and situation awareness, with the experience shown by pilots having a small effect on situation awareness.
